D’Tigress of Nigeria defeats Senegal to win the continental championship for a fourth straight year

The senior women’s basketball team from Nigeria, D’Tigress, won the 2023 Afrobasket Championship on Saturday in Kigali, Rwanda, by an 84-74 score over Senegal.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the squad put up outstanding performances to take home the trophy for a fourth time in a row.

They had plenty of Ifunaya Okoro, Sarah Ogoke, Murjanatu Musa, and Amy Okonkwo, who were essential for the Nigerian team.

As per usual, Okonkwo released the abilities required to keep Senegal at bay, and she was outstanding throughout the contest.

She received recognition for her efforts by being named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the competition.

With scores of 19-10, 24-21, 26-19, and 22-17 in each of the game’s four quarters, D’Tigress completely crushed Senegal and never allowed them an opportunity to hope.

Rena Wakama, the head coach of D’ Tigress, made history by becoming the first indigenous woman to manage a national team to victory in the Afrobasket championship.

Wakama complimented the team at the post-game press conference for their tenacity, perseverance, and passion in accomplishing such a feat so quickly after coming together.

“I’m incredibly proud of my team. They merit the honours. This is a fantastic accomplishment that deserves praise.

We didn’t have enough time to train together, but they nonetheless provided professionalism and performed a fantastic job of winning the championship, according to Wakama.

A sports journalist named Queen Moseph responded by calling the triumph amazing since it demonstrated the players’ character and zeal for winning for the country.

“We’re thrilled for them. They are deserving of recognition because they have cheered up many Nigerian basketball fans.

“We have always believed in them, and winning four straight championship titles shows how incredible the senior national team is,” Moseph remarked.

The triumph, according to sports analyst Kelechi Benard, was excellent for Nigeria and particularly for the females who had just recently gathered for a week of training.

The club has shown many basketball fans that effort pays off and that working together as a team is the only thing that can help us accomplish more, he said.(NAN)
