Dominant Man City Defeat Fulham, Edge Closer to Fourth Consecutive League Title
Manchester City ascended to the top of the Premier League standings with a resounding 4-0 triumph over Fulham, thanks to Josko Gvardiol’s impressive brace. Pep Guardiola’s team now finds themselves just two wins away from securing an unprecedented fourth consecutive English title.
Gvardiol opened the scoring early on, followed by Phil Foden’s 25th goal of the season in all competitions, extending City’s lead. Gvardiol then struck again, sealing the victory for City on a sunny afternoon by the River Thames.
Julian Alvarez further emphasized City’s dominance by converting a late penalty after Fulham’s Issa Diop was shown a red card for fouling the Argentine.
With a two-point lead over second-placed Arsenal, City will hope for a favor from their arch-rivals Manchester United, who face the Gunners on Sunday. If Arsenal fails to win, City can secure the title by defeating Tottenham on Tuesday or West Ham in their final match on May 19. Regardless of Arsenal’s results, City knows that two more victories will secure an impressive six titles in the last seven seasons.
This win against Fulham also ended Liverpool’s title challenge and marked City’s 16th consecutive victory over them, the longest winning streak against a single team in English football history. Guardiola had described the Fulham match as the first of four “finals” for City, as they aim to secure the title and then face Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
City rose to the challenge in style and will head to Tottenham next week with an unbeaten league run of 21 games, while also narrowing Arsenal’s goal difference advantage to just two. Despite concerns raised by a social media video showing Fulham players flying a kite during training, City proved their focus and determination in a match that held little significance for the hosts.
