Court Denies Bail to Human Rights Activist Dele Farotimi
In a controversial ruling, the court has denied bail to prominent human rights activist Dele Farotimi, sparking public debate over justice and human rights in Nigeria.
A magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti has refused to grant bail to human rights activist Dele Farotimi, who is accused of allegedly defaming Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University.
At the hearing on Tuesday, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun rescheduled the decision regarding Farotimi’s bail application to December 20.
This decision came after police counsel Samson Osobu argued that the defendant’s bail application was incomplete and improperly filed.
Farotimi’s case has garnered considerable public interest because of his reputation as an outspoken human rights advocate.
The accusations of his defamation of Afe Babalola, a respected legal icon and philanthropist, have ignited discussions about free speech and the boundaries of public criticism.
The postponement of the bail decision keeps Farotimi detained while both legal teams ready themselves for the upcoming court session.
