CJ Removes Binta Nyako from Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial, Assigns New Judge
The Chief Judge has officially withdrawn Justice Binta Nyako from Nnamdi Kanu’s trial, transferring the case to a new judge amid legal controversies.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has transferred the terrorism case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to a new judge as directed by Chief Judge John Tsoho.
The decision follows months of increasing pressure and a formal request from Kanu’s legal team. Previously, during a hearing on September 24, 2024, Kanu had requested that Justice Binta Nyako recuse herself due to concerns regarding judicial bias.
Aloy Ejimakor, the special counsel for Kanu, confirmed the reassignment in a statement on Saturday.
“According to the statement, prior to our legal team’s routine visit with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu yesterday, we received two official letters concerning his case. These letters are significant yet bittersweet.”
Ejimakor clarified that one letter was from the Chief Justice of Nigeria, responding to the team’s request for intervention. The other letter came from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and officially confirmed that the case had been reassigned.
In light of the recent development, Kanu directed his legal team to convey his gratitude to the Chief Justice for her prompt action. He also expressed thanks to supporters who championed his right to a fair trial.
The statement went on to say: “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has consistently been prepared to face trial, as he is deeply confident in his innocence. However, the unfavorable developments over the past six months (beginning with the recusal in September 2024) have posed significant threats to his constitutional rights, especially his right to a fair and prompt hearing.”
Kanu’s legal team reaffirmed their dedication to crafting a strong defense as the case moves forward under new judicial oversight.
