Children among those killed in Gaza as attack hits fleeing convoy

We have been reporting that an attack on a Palestinian convoy departing northern Gaza along a recognised evacuation route resulted in the deaths of at least 12 persons, including young children.

We validated the location of video footage from the strike’s aftermath that allowed us to do this.

The key to comprehending significant changes in disputes like these is to know when and where a video was shot.

Two recordings of the attack on a column of trucks travelling towards southern Gaza were examined by BBC Verify. The videos are extremely upsetting and feature way too graphic views of multiple dead bodies, including small children.

However, they also provide information on the incident’s location.

We were aware that one of the key evacuation routes is the 45-km Salah al-Deen road, which traverses Gaza from north to south. The strike may have happened on this road, according to local accounts.

The video depicts a central reservation as well as a number of structures, the aerial profile and placement of which we were able to match to a specific stretch of road.

The footage was likely captured soon after the hit at about 17:30 local time (13:30 GMT), according to free internet software that examines the angle of shadows.
