Tight security measures are in place at the National Assembly complex for an emergency plenary session. Discover the reasons behind the heightened alert.

Law enforcement has implemented a notable level of security measures surrounding the National Assembly Complex in Abuja as legislators gather for an impromptu plenary session today.

The Sergeant-At-Arms has taken an uncommon step by obstructing the MOPOL Gate entrance and mandating ID cards for entry. The purpose of this heightened security protocol is purportedly to deter demonstrators from convening at the location.

The emergency session was announced by both the Red and Green Chambers on Sunday, scheduled for today.

On Monday, the House of Representatives spokesperson Rotimi Akin announced that urgent legislative affairs will be discussed during Wednesday’s plenary session.

A statement released by the House of Representatives stated that a plenary session has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 31, 2024 as directed by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, PhD. The honorable members have received summons from their respective constituencies to attend this critical meeting. Additionally, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria Esq., Clerk of the House communicated this directive through an internal memo.

It is customary for the House to reconvene from recess in order to address urgent national matters, as pointed out by Akin.

Likewise, Senators of the Red Chamber were informed about a session today through a memorandum by Francis Akubueze, Clerk of the Senate. The memo stated that His Excellency Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio GCON, President of the Senate had instructed an emergency plenary sitting to be convened.

The plenary of the Senate will begin at twelve o’clock.
