BREAKING: Senate Approves Tinubu’s Suspension of Governor Fubara Amid State of Emergency

The Nigerian Senate has approved President Tinubu’s suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the state of emergency takes effect.

The Nigerian Senate has formally endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s directive to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State for a period of six months.

The announcement of the decision was made by Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, following a closed-door session on Thursday that lasted more than an hour.

Akpabio mentioned that the Senate used its Orders 133, 134, 135, and 136 to approve the resolution.

Earlier, Akpabio revealed that Tinubu had sent a letter of proclamation to the Senate regarding the six-month suspension imposed on Fubara.

During the plenary session, Akpabio read a letter stating: “In accordance with Section 305, Subsection 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended in 1999, I am submitting copies for Senate consideration from the official Gazette regarding the State of Emergency Proclamation 2025.”

The proclamation’s key features are as follows.

A declaration of a State of Emergency in one state within the Federation, specifically River State.

The Governor, the Deputy Governor, and all members of the State House of Assembly have been suspended from office.

“Vice-Admiral Iboete Iba is appointed as the Administrator to oversee the State’s affairs, following any instructions or regulations that may be issued by me from time to time.”

After reading the letter, Akpabio stated: “This letter is being referred to the entire Senate Committee for immediate passage.”

Right after the letter, Senator Seriake Dickson from PDP, representing Bayelsa West, raised a Point of Order 133 concerning holding a closed-door session.
