The former Niger Delta militant leader Gabriel ‘General’ Asabuja has been declared wanted by police authorities in Rivers State. The Rivers State Commissioner for Police, Tunji Disu, made this announcement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. Asabuja was captured in a viral video making strong comments amidst the local government council crisis in Rivers State.

Commissioner Disu expressed his disapproval of Asabuja’s actions, stating that the video caused panic within the state and beyond. He assured the public that appropriate actions have been initiated to bring Asabuja to justice. Disu emphasised that the police will not tolerate threats and intimidation towards citizens and are actively pursuing the former militant leader.

The ongoing crisis in Rivers State, stemming from a dispute between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike, has escalated with the recent conflict over the leadership of local government councils. Governor Fubara’s decision to swear in a caretaker committee following the expiration of the council members’ tenure has sparked protests and disagreements among Wike’s supporters.

Despite the tensions, the police authorities have issued a warning against violence and assured the public that they are prepared to address any disturbances in the state. The Rivers State Commissioner reiterated that Asabuja is wanted and that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend him.
