According to a statement released by the national publicity secretary of the party, Yakubu Shendam, Alhaji Ali decided to resign based on advice from his personal Physician, leading to the election of Dr. Ajuji Ahmed as the new Acting National Chairman of the NNPP.
The decision for the nomination of a new Acting National Chairman was made during the NWC meeting at the National Headquarters of the Party in Abuja, with Dr. Ajuji Ahmed being unanimously supported by all members of the NWC for the position.
Prior to his new role, Dr. Ahmed served as the Deputy National Secretary of the party and was the highest-ranking officer of the party from the North East region.
The party had to choose Dr. Ahmed as the new Acting National Chairman due to the constitutional requirement that the position vacated by an officer of the party must be filled by someone from the same part of the country, as explained by a source within the party.
This succession pattern was also followed when Alhaji Ali took over from Prof. Ahmed Rufai Alkali after the 2023 general elections.
