Benue government announces July 6 as date for LG polls

The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, BSIEC, has officially declared that elections are set to take place in the councils of 23 Local Government Areas of the state on July 6, 2023.

This announcement was made by the Chairman of BSIEC, John Chen, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, the state capital, where action plans and activities for the upcoming elections were unveiled.

Chen emphasized that the elections will cover the positions of chairmen and councilors in the local government councils and council wards, including the anticipated newly created council wards in the state.

The decision to conduct these elections was prompted by the governor’s directive for the commission to swiftly initiate the necessary processes and procedures to ensure that the elections are conducted in a transparent, fair, and credible manner.

The unveiling of the official election timetable and schedule of activities during the stakeholders’ meeting signifies a significant milestone in the preparation for the Local Government Council elections in Benue State.

The comprehensive document outlines the key milestones that BSIEC will undertake to guarantee a free and fair electoral process, emphasizing the commission’s commitment to avoiding any form of fraudulent or substandard elections that could compromise the quality of leadership in the state.

In addition to the election timetable, BSIEC also revealed its intention to create additional council wards within Benue State.

This initiative is a response to the growing demographic, social, political, and economic activities at the grassroots level.

The commission believes that the establishment of more council wards will enhance representation and bring governance and democratic benefits closer to the people, ensuring a more inclusive and effective local government system.
