“bad-belle” Nigerians prevented Abiola from becoming president – Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, claimed on Wednesday that those who stopped Late MKO Abiola from becoming president in 1993 were “bad-behaved” individuals.

At a celebration for the Baptist Boys High School (BBHS) in Abeokuta, his secondary school, Obasanjo made this statement.

Obasanjo said that he and Abiola both went to the same high school and that, if it weren’t for “Nigerian bad belle,” the school would have produced two presidents of Nigeria.

“Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the first millionaire in Nigeria’s communications sector and the widely hailed victor of the 1993 Presidential election, was in a league of his own. If it weren’t for Nigerian Bad Belle, M.K.O. Abiola would have been in power, and with me as the leader, we would have required one more former student of BBHS to lead us to victory three times in a row before we could settle it at BBHS for good. “And that presents a problem for the next generation of old boys,” he remarked.

The presidential election on June 12 was declared invalid by a former head of state of Nigeria named Ibrahim Babangida, as reported by the Daily Post.

The election, which was hailed as one of the most free in Nigeria, was won by Abiola, who was running as the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) candidate at the time.

Civil turmoil in Nigeria during the period was brought on by the annulment of the election, Abiola’s arrest, and his final demise in 1998.

In the meantime, after confirming that Abiola won the election on June 12, 1993, President Muhammadu Buhari apologized on behalf of the Federal Government to Abiola’s family, the Yoruba people, and the whole country in 2018.

Also, after Abiola died, Buhari gave him the country’s highest honor, the GCFR, and changed May 29 to June 12 as a national holiday to promote democracy.
