Assassination of a Catholic priest in Edo

According to reports, Charles Igechi, a priest employed by the Benin Catholic Archdiocese, has died.

Gunmen shot and killed the priest on Agbor Road in the Ikhueniro axis of Benin, the capital of Edo, on Wednesday.

The incident was confirmed in a statement released on Thursday by Augustine Akubeze, the catholic archbishop of Benin.

The religious leader emphasized that the police have been notified and encouraged the security organization to capture the offenders.

The deceased, who was ordained last year, was attacked and shot while returning to his place of employment, according to Akubeze.

Ikpoba Hill’s Boundary Street, which is part of the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, is where the remains of Igechi were discovered.

“Rev. Fr. Charles Onomhoale Igechi was the vice principal of St. Michael College in Ikhueniro when he was ordained on August 13, 2022.

“We learned this morning that he was shot while returning to his place of employment…We kindly ask for your prayers for his soul’s peaceful rest.

On June 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., Father Akubeze announced a Mass for Igechi in the chapel of the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Center.
