Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions face a setback after a disappointing loss to West Ham, raising doubts about their championship chase.

Arsenal’s quest for the Premier League title took a significant hit when they were defeated 1-0 at home by low-ranked West Ham on Saturday, despite having only ten players.

Jarrod Bowen scored the lone goal with a header just before half-time, and an injury-plagued Arsenal couldn’t respond after Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off in the 73rd minute.

The loss keeps Arsenal in second place, still trailing leaders Liverpool by eight points.

Since Liverpool, the current leaders, are not playing until their Sunday match against Manchester City, Arsenal had an opportunity to narrow the gap in the title race with a win at Emirates Stadium.

However, Mikel Arteta’s team experienced their first defeat in 16 league matches when Jarrod Bowen scored West Ham’s winning goal in the first half. The situation worsened for the Gunners after halftime as Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off.

Arsenal, currently in second place and without a top-flight loss since their match against Newcastle last November, trail Liverpool by eight points. Should Liverpool defeat the struggling City team, they would extend their lead to an impressive 11 points.

After scoring twice as a substitute in the final moments of last weekend’s victory against Leicester, Spain midfielder Mikel Merino was drafted into injury-plagued Arsenal’s starting lineup as an improvised striker.

However, without Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Bukayo Saka on the field, Arsenal’s lack of sharpness was evident when Jarrod Bowen capitalized on Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s precise cross with a header in the 44th minute.

Arsenal’s woes deepened in the 73rd minute when Lewis-Skelly fouled Mohammed Kudus as the West Ham forward burst away at the halfway line.

Lewis-Skelly initially received a yellow card, but after referee Craig Pawson reviewed the pitchside monitor, the defender’s penalty was upgraded to a red card.
