The Nigerian Army has renamed the Ikeja Cantonment in honor of the late Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated that the decision was made to honor Lagbaja for his bravery and contributions to Nigeria.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the name change is more than just a new title; it symbolizes our respect, gratitude, and acknowledgment of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja’s bravery and sacrifices as one of Nigeria’s outstanding military officers and former chief of army staff.

By naming it in honor of Lieutenant General Lagbaja, we pay tribute to a leader whose life exemplified courage, discipline, and patriotism.

His exceptional service in the Nigerian Army for over thirty years, especially in counterinsurgency efforts, internal security measures, and peacekeeping missions, merits recognition.

I applaud the Nigerian Army and the Ministry of Defence for this initiative, as it promotes a culture of honoring our heroes and ensures that all patriots know their sacrifices will always be recognized.

Today, I attended the ceremony where the Ikeja Military Cantonment was renamed T. A. Lagbaja Cantonment.

Additionally, the Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, paid tribute to his predecessor by praising the infrastructural developments he implemented during his time as Commander of the 9 Brigade.

Oluyede stated that the cantonment was considered the most suitable way to honor Lagbaja’s memory.

Lagbaja held the position of Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until he passed away at the age of 56 on November 5, 2024, due to an illness.

In the meantime, the Katsina State Hisbah Board has instructed all private schools throughout the state to suspend operations during Ramadan.

The government-supported institution tasked with enforcing Sharia law according to Islamic principles has warned that non-compliance will not be tolerated.

Malam Aminu Usman, the commander-general of the board, revealed in a statement issued on Thursday, February 27, 2025, that the decision aligns with directives from the State Government.

Usman urged school proprietors to adhere strictly to the directive, emphasizing that the closure is intended to enable pupils to fully observe the Muslim fasting period.

“The statement added that the directives include additional lessons, please.”
