Two suspected assailants shot and killed two police personnel at Uga roundabout in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra on Thursday evening.
The gunmen, who were on a kidnap mission, were operating in the area when a team of policemen attached to a motorcade unknowingly encountered them.
The policemen were attempting to clear a traffic gridlock when the armed men sensed danger and opened fire, resulting in a shootout.
Other personnel responded, causing the assailants to flee the scene.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Mr Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered an intensive manhunt for the attackers.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Toochulwu Ikenga, stated that the gunmen were disguised in military attire.
The police-led mobile Forward Operating Base promptly responded to the incident, and a Lexus SUV used by the gang, an AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the slain officers, and an improvised explosive device were recovered.
The CP commended the officers for their dedication and urged them to remain vigilant, assuring that technology would be utilized to track down the criminals responsible for the attack.
