The fabrication and sale of coffins for public display has been prohibited by the Anambra State Government. Furthermore, the deposition of corpses in the mortuary or any other location beyond two months from the date of death has also been outlawed.

These measures have been implemented through a law passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly in order to regulate burial and funeral ceremonies within the state.

Under the new law, mortuary attendants are required to report to the Ministry of Health if a corpse remains in their care for more than one month. The law emphasizes that individuals who violate these provisions may be subject to a fine of N100,000, a six-month prison sentence, or both.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State expressed his appreciation to the Assembly for enacting this legislation, stating that the Anambra Burial Law is a progressive step towards alleviating the financial burden on the less fortunate and empowering women by eliminating oppressive practices during funerals.

The law also cautions against the obstruction of roads and streets during burial ceremonies, advising that such activities can only be carried out with permission from the relevant local government authority.
