The situation in Rivers State appears to be escalating further, as the Association of Local Government Areas of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state has accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of withholding funds designated for the 23 LGAs. This alleged action has impeded the ability of the local government chairmen to effectively carry out their responsibilities, with claims that it is tantamount to dismantling the local government councils in the state.

The ALGON members have expressed their support for the impeachment call made by the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tony Okocha, urging the State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara. During a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the State ALGON Chairman, Allwell Ihunda, highlighted the failure of the state government to convene the Joint Account Allocation Committee Meeting, resulting in the withholding of funds from the local government councils since April 2024, and in the case of Emuoha LGA since March 2024.
