Olumide Akpata, a Labour Party, LP candidate for governor, has denied rumours that Governor Godwin Obaseki is funding him.

Akpata, a former NBA president and member of the Nigerian Bar Association, called the story “baseless and unfounded.”

Speaking to reporters in the capital of Edo State, Benin, Akpata described as immature people who suggested he was trying to purchase the LP ticket with cash.

“That I am sponsored by Godwin Obaseki is an unfounded and baseless rumour,” asserts Akpata.

“It was spread by two careless internet blogs, which I will target with all the ferocity I possess. My strategy for dealing with fake news is to catch it early and address it before it worsens.

I told the politicians who have been using it, including those in my party, that it is a very flimsy justification or argument.

“Since my relationship with the governor has never been hidden, politicians who are incapable of reaching a consensus quickly assume that two candidates who sit together must be from the same party.”
