AFCON 2024: Senegal coach, Cisse expresses disappointment over defeat to Ivory Coast

In their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, round of 16 matchup against Ivory Coast on Monday night, Senegal’s head coach Aliou Cisse bemoaned that his squad had lost focus after conceding an early goal.

Additionally, Cisse remained ambiguous regarding his future with the team by refusing to provide a clear picture.

After 120 minutes, goals from Frank Yannick Kessie and Habib Diallo guaranteed a 1-1 draw between the two clubs.

But the Elephants prevailed 5–4 in a penalty shootout to advance to the round of eight.

“We will see what the future has in store for us,” Cisse remarked at his press conference following the game. I want to take some time to process this loss because it has disappointed everyone.

“Talks with the federation will undoubtedly take place, but right now, my future is unimportant.”

“I’m disappointed with the outcome for my players and our people because we came here to win this CAN,” he continued. I won’t delve into the many details of the game.

Unfortunately, after we opened the score, we lost track. But you have to maintain your dignity whether you win or lose, and I am proud of my guys for that.
