Adamawa: Tribunal dismisses Binani’s appeal and sustains the election of Governor Fintiri

In the March 2023 governorship election, Umaru Fintiri was legitimately re-elected as the state’s governor, according to the Adamawa State Governorship Election Tribunal, which confirmed this on Saturday.

following the contentious Adamawa governorship race that resulted in a supplemental vote. The incumbent Fintiri, who ran for reelection, was proclaimed the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated Aisha “Binani” Dahiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 430,861 votes at the conclusion of the dramatic exercise that concluded in April. Aisha Dahiru received 398,738 votes.

Although Binani and a few other competitors had petitioned the Tribunal to have Fintiri’s election declared void, the court on Saturday affirmed the incumbent governor’s victory for a second term.

Prior to the supplemental election on April 15, 2023, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the then-Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Adamawa State, courted controversy by declaring “Binani” the victor of the thrilling poll while the results were still being tallied.

Due to the circumstances, INEC annulled Yunusa-Ari’s decision and placed him under suspension. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari issued an order for a thorough inquiry into the actions of the electoral commissioner and the security officers present at the time of the declaration.

Subsequently, INEC declared Fintiri the official victor of the dramatic poll, capping the proceedings.

Later, Yunusa-Ari was taken into custody and turned over to the authorities to face charges.
