According to the UNFPA, 250 million Nigerians might become poor
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), if the Federal Government of Nigeria does not invest in healthcare and education, over 250 million Nigerians would experience poverty in the coming years.
The announcement was delivered on Monday in Abuja during a parliamentary meeting to hasten Nigeria’s demographic transition by Ms. Ulla Mueller, the UNFPA Country Representative.
She emphasized that in a world of 8 billion people, in a country that will soon be the third most populated in the world, there may be 250 million people who could have a sense of prospects and possibilities. She said that the government must act immediately.
According to her, 250 million people may experience increasing poverty and insecurity if incorrect investments were made.
We must document this, stated the country representative. Without family planning, there will be no demographic transformation or universal health care.
Nasir Isa Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission, thought that any country must first achieve several requirements, beginning with a swift and rapid drop in fertility, to allow for a substantial demographic transition to allow for economic change.
