According to the FRSC, the death toll in the Calabar Carnival tragedy has risen to eight

The sad tragedy involving the Calabar carnival has already claimed eight lives.

On Wednesday, Maikano Hassan, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River, verified this to NAN.

Remember that a tragic accident occurred on Tuesday during the Bikers’ parade, a key component of the annual Calabar carnival.

During the incident, a Camry’s driver lost control and slammed into the onlookers in front of the Jumat Mosque in Bogobiri.

According to reports, 29 people received emergency medical care and were transported to the Naval Hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, while seven people reportedly died at the scene.

21 male adults, 3 females, 2 male children, and 3 female children are among the injured.

The third of the three injured female minors, according to the FRSC sector commander,

“We visited the hospital where the injured were receiving medical attention and learned that one more death had been reported.”

“We’re happy to report that some of the incident’s victims have been released from the hospital, while others are doing well under treatment,” the man added.

NAN says that the incident on Tuesday, which Governor Ben Ayade and other important people were there for, ended the carnival’s day five activities in a hurry.

Additionally, the yearly carnival that was inaugurated under the watch of the previous governor, Donald Duke, has not been held for the past two years.

In 2020, the carnival wasn’t held because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, however, no reason was given for why it wasn’t held.

In the meantime, the governor expressed sympathy to the families of those who died and pledged to prosecute the driver of the car that caused the collision.
