On June 6, 2022, the prisoner was arraigned before Justice Adeniyi Familoni on a single count of rape.

The indictment states that Olarewaju violated section 31(1) of the Child Right Law, Cap C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012, by raping a three-year-old girl on August 6, 2021, in Ado Ekiti, within the court’s jurisdiction.

“I was not around, I did not know what happened until the following day, when I was bathing my daughter, she did not allow me to wash her private part,” the victim’s mother testified in court.

“She kept saying it was Seun when I inquired what had happened to her bumbum, but I was terrified when I looked and saw that it was red and swollen.

“My brother-in-law described what happened between Seun’s mother, my mother-in-law, and my daughter yesterday. After that, I heard Seun’s mother and my mother-in-law fighting outside, and that’s when I had a true picture of what happened.”

“I reported the issue to the police, who took over the investigation later.”

The prosecution, Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, called three witnesses in order to support his case, and he also submitted documents such as the defendant’s statement, photos of the victim and defendant, and a medical report.

Through his attorney Luke Ekene, the defendant testified, calling four witnesses and pleading with the court to balance justice and mercy.

“I believe the defendant as a young person deserves a second chance to redeem himself and be a good citizen,” Justice Familoni stated in his ruling. If I give him a life sentence, he will not be able to do it.

Olarewaju Seun, the defendant, is thus given a sentence of thirty calendar months in prison without the possibility of a fine. The punishment will go into effect on September 20, 2021, the day he was detained again by the police and placed under custody.
