In a statement released on Monday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reassured Nigerians that they will have their support in the general elections of 2023 and cautioned workers against making compromises.

In Lagos, at the start of a two-day induction retreat for the commission’s administrative secretaries, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of INEC, provided this guarantee.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the United Nations Development Program organized the retreat.

Yakubu, who was represented by Mr. Sam Olumekun, the INEC National Commissioner, Election and Party Monitoring Committee (EPMC), stated in his opening comments that the retreat was a component of INEC’s preparation for the general elections of 2023.

He claims that in the 23 years following the restoration of democracy, the commission has made steady progress, with the quality of the country’s elections improving and public trust in the system rising.

“Let me reiterate: Nigeria is the Commission’s country of allegiance.
Our allegiance is to Nigerians who desire transparent, credible, fair, and free elections.

In this regard, I would like to caution all staff members of the commission to behave themselves impartially and professionally throughout the next election, Yakubu added.

In order to improve electoral integrity and the voter experience through innovations, planning, and technology, he said that since the 2011 general elections, INEC has been directed by this fresh information and experience gained from the handling of prior elections.

As a result, he continued, “our elections are better, and the results are less controversial and unpleasant.”
