Jacob Zuma faces potential expulsion from the ANC, signaling a major shift in South Africa’s political dynamics.
A leaked document reveals that the African National Congress (ANC), which governs South Africa, has opted to expel ex-president Jacob Zuma for leading a competitor faction in the May elections.
Earlier this month, disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Zuma which led to the decision.
As per the document dated July 29, expulsion from the ANC has been imposed upon the member accused. Additionally highlighted is Zuma’s provision of appealing to National Disciplinary Committee within a period of 21 days.
Despite previous controversies, Zuma maintains his popularity and was suspended by the ANC in January for supporting uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party. In the May 29 elections, MK gained 14.5% of votes and came in third place. Currently leading with 58 seats out of a total of 400- seat National Assembly is none other than Zuma himself as he heads up this new political group.
The ANC’s performance in the May elections marked its weakest since coming to power three decades ago and ending apartheid, receiving only 40% of the vote.
