Tenement rate payers have been forewarned by the Zamfara State Internal Revenue Service (ZSIRS) not to pay their rates to local government councils any longer, as the board is the only entity authorised to collect rates in the state.
Hajiya Rakiya Ahmed Dodo, the Executive Chairperson of the Service, revealed this on her weekly Zamfara Radio programme, “Da Ruwan Ciki.”
The call became necessary, according to Hajiya Dodo, who was represented by Alhaji Hadi Bawa Gusau, the Director of Information and Intelligence Gathering for the Service, because Zamfara State is the only state in the federation that receives the least amount of revenue within its purview.
The Executive Chairperson went on to say that in order to further the state’s revenue collection efforts, qualified tenement rate payers are encouraged to assist and collaborate with the Internal Revenue Service.
According to her, tenement rates are taxes that are levied on any commercial activity, including businesses such as banks, plazas, bakeries, block industries, filling stations, oil mills, rental homes, and corporations.
Alhaji Mas’ud Wada, a specialist and representative of the Zamfara State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, elucidated in his input the importance of assigning the State Internal Revenue Service the task of collecting tenement rates, thereby relieving local government councils of their tax collection obligations.
He declared that the State Internal Revenue Service (ZSIRS) has the authority to do the task and that it will be successful in doing so.
According to Wada, the government will be able to carry out development initiatives in local government districts as well as the state as a whole once tenement rates are paid into its coffers.
