The Warriors of Zimbabwe held Nigeria’s Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw in their World Cup qualifying match on Sunday at Huye Stadium in Rwanda.
After an unimpressive draw with Lesotho at Godswill Akpabio Stadium last Thursday, the Super Eagles were under pressure to perform well.
They did not get off to the start they had hoped for, as in the 26th minute, Zimbabwe’s Musona beat Nigeria’s Francis Uzoho with an immaculate 30-meter free kick.
With Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi as their point guards, the 2013 AFCON champions found it difficult to control the game, and at halftime, Zimbabwe was the more formidable team.
At the break, Jose Peseiro would make three substitutions, replacing Ola Oina, Onyeka, and Nathan Tella with Victor Boniface, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Osayi-Samuel.
Peseiro’s team was deservedly rewarded in the 67th minute when Iheanacho equalised for the Super Eagles with a strike that went narrowly inside the left post.
In the last minutes of the game, Nigeria persisted in trying to score the game-winning goal, but the Warriors held firm in defence.
