In his Independence Day address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserts that the war has ‘returned’ to Russia, highlighting the ongoing conflict’s impact on both nations.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Independence Day video address filmed in the border area where Kyiv initiated its surprise incursion into Kursk, Russia aimed to “destroy” Ukraine; but now, war has come back home.
Amidst the prolonged war, Ukraine celebrated its 33rd independence day from the Soviet Union on Saturday. However, Ukrainian forces entered Russia’s Kursk region while Moscow gained ground in several eastern regions of Ukraine.
On Saturday, Zelenskyy shared a video from an uninhabited forested location in the Sumy district which he had recently visited. He stated that it was only a “few kilometers” away from where Ukrainian troops entered Russia on August 6th.
Zelenskyy declared that Ukraine is once again springing a surprise and assured Russia that they will face the consequences of their actions.
He stated that Russia’s objective in initiating its 2022 invasion was to obliterate their nation. Furthermore, he mentioned how the destructive elements brought by the enemy had since recoiled back into their own land.
Zelenskyy stated that those who desire to spread wickedness in our nation will face its consequences on their own soil. He clarified it as an act of justice, devoid of prediction, arrogant satisfaction or unfair vengeance.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the offensive in Kursk marks a highly noteworthy cross-border attack.
Reportedly, Ukrainian forces have taken control of several dozen villages over an area spanning more than 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) and apprehended Russian soldiers starting from August 6th.
According to Zelenskyy, Putin is an unwell elderly person located at Red Square who persistently intimidates others with the threat of pressing the red button. Additionally, Russia’s grand military parade transpires each year on Red Square in Moscow and is frequented by Putin alongside other high-ranking political and defense figures.
Despite being shaken by the Kursk incursion, Moscow’s progress in eastern Ukraine remains unaffected.
According to Al Jazeera’s Alex Gatopoulos reporting from Kyiv, the capital city’s festivities were subdued and discouraged massive gatherings. This was a departure from previous years when displays of Russian military equipment conquering Ukraine were showcased in parades.
“He said that there has been an anticipation of a significant drone or missile assault from Russia, causing concern.”
To ensure readiness for any potential increase, the air defences in the capital are on high alert. Thus far, there has been no activity.
Zelenskyy signed a law on Saturday, which prohibits Moscow-associated religious groups in Ukraine including the Orthodox Church linked to Moscow. The decision has been made public on the Ukrainian parliament’s website.
On Saturday, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, commented that Ukraine was rapidly progressing towards becoming a member state in the European Union.
To celebrate Ukraine’s independence day, von der Leyen posted a brief video on X where she declared that Europe will stand by Ukraine since it is an integral part of the continent. She stressed that their freedom and security are intertwined with each other.
“You are now rapidly approaching the milestone of becoming a member of the European Union. We have stood by your side from day one and will continue to do so until you reach this goal. Glory to Ukraine – Slava Ukraini.”
In June 2022, Ukraine was officially designated as a candidate for EU membership, marking four months since the invasion by Russia.
