Zelensky Urges Creation of a Unified ‘Army of Europe’ for Regional Defense

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the formation of a joint European military force, emphasizing the need for stronger defense collaboration amid ongoing security threats.

Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has proposed the formation of an “army of Europe” to protect against Russia, hinting that the United States might not always be available to support the continent.

At the Munich Security Conference, he emphasized that Ukraine would “never accept deals made behind our backs without our involvement,” following an agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to initiate peace talks.

In a speech delivered on Friday, US Vice President JD Vance criticized European democracies and cautioned that Europe must significantly increase its efforts in defense.

Zelensky expressed his belief that it was time to establish a European armed forces.

He stated that the previous day in Munich, the US vice president announced a clear end to decades of traditional relations between Europe and America.

From this point forward, circumstances will change and Europe must adapt accordingly.

Earlier this week, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine as a “factory reset” for NATO, indicating that the alliance must be “robust,” “strong,” and “real.”

On Saturday, Zelensky stated: “To be frank, we must consider the possibility that America could refuse to support Europe on an issue that poses a threat.”

Numerous leaders have discussed the need for Europe to establish its own military.

An army, a European force.

The idea of a European army has also been suggested by other leaders, such as France’s President Emmanuel Macron. He has consistently supported the creation of an EU military force to lessen dependence on the United States.

Zelensky mentioned that President Trump recently discussed his conversation with Putin and pointed out that not once did he indicate a need for Europe to be involved, which speaks volumes.

The era when America supported Europe simply out of tradition is over.

As the three-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches, both Trump and Hegseth have expressed doubts about Ukraine joining NATO.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense also stated that restoring Ukraine to its pre-2014 borders is unrealistic.

Zelensky stated that he would “keep the possibility of NATO membership for Ukraine on the table.”
