Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has stated that his administration is making every effort to free the Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) students who have been kidnapped.

In a statement released in Gusau on Thursday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Suleiman Bala, the governor provided the assurance.

Lawal, who visited the institution to express his sympathies, called the situation sad and a hindrance to education. He also reaffirmed his commitment to putting an end to bandits’ and other criminals’ activities in the state.

The governor also remained steadfast in his position that bandits must lay down their guns or face the full force of the law.

Prof. Mu’azu Abubakar, the university’s vice chancellor, disclosed in his address that 12 students and nine construction workers are still with the robbers.

He explained that nine pupils escaped the bandits, leaving the other 21 victims in captivity while six students were saved.

As security personnel step up their attempts to free the kidnapped students unharmed, Mu’azu claimed that the university administration has maintained close contact with the parents of the students.

The vice chancellor advised the parents to exercise greater patience and to make a prayer request for their children’s safe return.

In addition, he cautioned university students against being sidetracked from their studies and assured them that measures were being made to make the institution safer for studying. (NAN)
