On January 2, the Security Council welcomed Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia as the five newly elected non-permanent members for the 2025-2026 term.
During the flag installation ceremony for newly elected Members, Denmark’s Ambassador Christina Markus emphasized today’s urgent global challenges. She cited ongoing conflicts, climate disasters, and humanitarian crises as indicators of deep worldwide uncertainty. “The road ahead is demanding,” she stated, “but our steadfast commitment is essential to effectively tackling these issues.”
Greek Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris expressed that his country aims to be a stabilizing force, acting as a bridge between the north and south, east and west, while helping to restore the true essence of peacefully resolving disputes.
Pakistan’s Ambassador, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized that the most effective approach to addressing today’s complex challenges is through cooperative multilateralism centered around the United Nations. He highlighted the importance of earnestly tackling both long-standing and emerging conflicts by prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy. Additionally, he advocated for efforts in confidence-building at regional and global levels as a means to alleviate tensions, curb arms races, and foster an environment conducive to peace, stability, and development.
Panama’s Ambassador, Eloy Alfaro de Alba, stated that the Security Council was pivotal in Panama’s national history by conducting a formal meeting for only the second time outside its headquarters—in Panama City in 1973—under the skilled leadership of Aquilino Boyd, who was then our ambassador to the United Nations.
Somalia’s Ambassador, Abukar Dahir Osman, expressed that as a proud member of the African Union, Arab League, and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Somalia is deeply aware of the sacred trust placed in their nation and the significant responsibility this mandate carries.
The five newly elected countries will join Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia as non-permanent members of the Council.
