Singer Yemi Alade has expressed her dissatisfaction with the Lagos State Government regarding the recent demolition of houses in Maryland.
She criticized the government for making citizens homeless overnight and stated that the ongoing demolitions are negatively impacting the real estate sector and driving away investors.
In a video message shared on Instagram, Alade questioned the logic behind people investing millions of naira and dollars into real estate, only for the government to demolish their properties.
She highlighted the detrimental effect this has on the value of real estate in the state and the loss of trust and hope for those who have saved to improve their lives. On the other hand, the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the houses being demolished were constructed on drainage channels.
He clarified that the developers had encroached on the setback, obstructing the flow of rainwater. The governor, Jide Sanwoolu, approved a reduction in the right of way (ROW) to 100 meters from 140, with a distribution of 60% to Mende and 40% to Ogudu.
