Obeta John, a 27-year-old suspected online fraudster also known as Yahoo Boy, is accused of killing his girlfriend Idowu Buhari because she reportedly refused to send him the proceeds of a scam that a victim had supposedly placed into the girl’s account.
According to reports, the culprit battered the victim, an HND 1 mass communication student at Gateway Polytechnic Saapade, Ogun State, to death.
According to Abimbola Oyeyemi, the spokesman for the Ogun State police, the suspect was detained on Tuesday as a result of a distress call that was received at the Ode-Remo divisional headquarters.
The suspect, Eredu Ishara, who lives at 3, Mojubade Compound, reportedly shut his door before beginning to beat the girl and bashing her head against the wall.
After receiving the distress call, CSP Fasogbon Olayemi, the DPO of the Ode-Remo division, immediately dispatched his men to the spot, where they “met the victim in a pool of her blood after pushing the door open,” according to Oyeyemi.
The victim was taken by the police in a hurry to the State Hospital in Ishara, where the attending physician declared her dead.
The alleged Enugu State native is being held by police at the moment.
During questioning, the suspect admitted to being an internet fraudster and that one of his clients had transferred a particular amount of money into the account of his deceased girlfriend, which she had refused to give him, according to Oyeyemi.
He cited the suspect as stating that the argument over the money ultimately resulted in the girl’s death.
Lanre Bankole, the state police chief in Ogun, has ordered that the suspect be transferred to the state CIID for additional investigation and prosecution by the murder unit.
