A 65-year-old woman, identified as Mrs. Martha Umenweke, was apprehended for allegedly causing harm to her 19-year-old house-help in Ezinifite, Aguata local government area of Anambra state after a whistleblower reported the incident.
The victim, Chidiebere Otenyi from Nkanu, Enugu State, disclosed that she was accused by her employer of stealing ₦25,000, despite denying the allegation while still in pain from the ordeal.
Chidiebere mentioned that she had been living with her employer for over a year and four months, enduring severe punishment even for minor issues, and being deprived of food.
She also revealed that despite being 19 years old, she was only in primary 3 due to being demoted upon arrival.
Reports indicated that an individual named Mr. David, who was an alibi for the suspect, restrained the victim by tying her hands and legs after the assault.
In response, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, expressed outrage at the severity of the injuries inflicted on the victim and promised to take action against the perpetrator.
Obinabo assured the victim of justice and emphasized that the suspect would not evade punishment for causing harm to another individual.
She confirmed that the case had been transferred to the police for further investigation and prosecution at the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka.
