During the 2024 World Meteorological Day celebration in Abuja, WMO representative Bernard Gomez emphasized the importance of being proactive in response to weather forecasts provided by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The theme of the event, “At the frontline of Climate Action,” underscored the critical nature of the current situation regarding severe weather patterns and climate change impacts, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action to safeguard lives, properties, and livelihoods.

Gomez pointed out that the recent erratic weather patterns observed in Nigeria, particularly during the transition from the dry to rainy season, serve as clear indicators of the extreme weather events that could affect the entire country.

He stressed the importance of NiMet’s role in providing accurate weather predictions and alerts, urging communities to remain vigilant and responsive to these forecasts to mitigate potential risks.

Additionally, Gomez highlighted the significance of NiMet’s predictions in helping Nigerians comprehend the current global climate conditions, anticipate future trends, and formulate effective strategies for adaptation and mitigation.

He expressed confidence that by implementing the National Framework for the Application of Climate Services (NFACS) in Nigeria, the country could enhance its resilience to climate-induced disasters and effectively address climate shocks.

Gomez emphasized that building resilience to climate shocks is achievable, with NiMet’s forecasts serving as a crucial foundation for this resilience-building process across the nation.
