The ongoing strike by primary school teachers in the territory has been attributed to the Chairmen of the six area councils by the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.
During a press conference in Abuja, Wike expressed his disappointment in the local council officials for not fulfilling their responsibilities.
The strike, which was directed by the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, is a result of unresolved issues such as non-payment of 40 per cent Peculiar Allowance and 25 months minimum wage arrears.
The NUT had previously suspended the strike in October 2023 for six weeks to allow for the resolution of these issues, but no progress was made.
Wike emphasized that the Chairmen are to blame for the prolonged strike and urged them to take their duties more seriously. Despite the situation, the minister stated that he has invited the striking teachers for a meeting in order to find a resolution.
