Wike Claims Fubara is Funding APP’s Campaign in Rivers LG Polls
Former Governor Nyesom Wike alleges that current Governor Fubara is behind the sponsorship of the Action People’s Party in the ongoing Rivers local government elections.
Former Rivers governor Nyesom Wike has alleged that his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, funded the Action Peoples Party (APP) in the recently concluded local government election in the oil-rich state.
A few days ago, Governor Fubara inaugurated local government chairpersons in Rivers State. The APP secured victory in 22 out of the 23 chairmanship positions during the election. Bala Mohammed from Bauchi State, who is the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, was also present at the event.
In the lead-up to the election, Fubara, a member of the PDP, stated that he is the “biggest loser” because his party was not on the ballot.
However, Wike, currently serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), alleges that Fubara financed the APP for the election.
During Tuesday’s episode of Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he addressed the accusations by saying, “People today accuse me of betraying my party and call for discipline. However, I did not engage in any anti-party activities; instead, I emphasized the importance of standing up for equity, fairness, and justice,” referring to his support for President Bola Tinubu from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 election.

“What happened today? The APP was sponsored by Governor Fubara, and the chairman of the PDP governors’ forum attended the swearing-in.”
Wike served as the governor of Rivers State for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from 2015 to 2023. He participated in the party’s presidential primary election but was defeated by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He claimed that the party was being unjust and argued that the PDP should allocate its presidential ticket to candidates from the southern region of the country, rather than leaving it available for individuals like Atiku to run.
Attempts to reconcile Atiku and Wike were unsuccessful, prompting the FCT minister to support Tinubu of the APC. This contributed to the PDP’s defeat in Rivers State during the presidential election. Subsequently, he was appointed as a minister by the president.
Despite the calls for Wike’s suspension from the PDP, he maintained that he did not violate any party laws and does not regret supporting the APC.
“I don’t have any regrets,” Wike stated when questioned about his support for Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
