Widow seeks justice as husband’s accused murderers intimidate her from jail

Mrs. Christiana Onyebuchi Apugo, a 32-year-old widow hailing from Umuawa Alaocha community in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, has raised serious concerns regarding her safety.

She has accused her late husband’s brother, Victor Orisara Apugo, who is currently in custody at a Nigerian Correctional Facility, of threatening her with harm once he is released from prison.

In her appeal to the Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechuckwu Uwanna, Mrs. Apugo detailed how Mr. Victor Apugo and other suspects involved in her husband’s murder have been sending threatening messages to her.

The incident, which took place on November 7, 2022, resulted in the tragic death of her husband, Mr. Onyebuchi Orisara Apugo, who was allegedly beaten to death after being accused of stealing a plantain.

Mrs. Apugo recounted the horrifying events of that night when her husband was brutally murdered in her presence while she was still pregnant. She mentioned that the perpetrators not only took her husband’s life but also threatened her with dire consequences if she tried to seek help from the villagers.

The suspects were initially arrested by the Afugiri Police station, then rearrested by the Zone 9 Police Command, and subsequently charged to Court.

Seeking justice for her deceased husband, Mrs. Apugo urged the Attorney General to thoroughly investigate the alleged threats made against her by the accused individuals.

Fearing for her safety and that of her baby boy, Mrs. Apugo revealed that she had to flee to her hometown in Okwelle, Imo State, due to hunger and the looming threat on their lives.

The situation has caused distress not only to her but also to the community, as confirmed by the traditional Prime Minister of Umuawa Alaocha, Ikedinachi Moses, who reported the matter to the Palace of HRH, Eze Godswill Asomugha.

While the allegations made by Mrs. Apugo are grave and demand urgent attention, it is essential for a thorough investigation to be conducted to ensure that justice is served and the safety of the widow and her child is guaranteed.

The involvement of the Attorney General and other relevant authorities is crucial in addressing this distressing situation and preventing any further harm to Mrs. Apugo and her family.
