Due to ongoing leadership disputes in the party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has expressed its dismay at being unable to partake in Saturday’s local elections.
In all 171 wards across the 13 councils in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged as triumphant.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki, Steve Oruruo, who chairs the PDP Caretaker Committee in Ebonyi State, voiced the party’s discontent and emphasized his committee’s endeavors to rejuvenate it. He also implored members to prioritize unity.
Oruruo expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s decision not to field a candidate, stating that it is essential to establish a strong foundation before nominating candidates for elections. The party is currently facing various challenges such as leadership crises, and he urged members to be united in tackling them.

He emphasized the need for building an inclusive platform that will lead Ebonyi and Nigeria towards progress and cautioned against having a one-party system which could hamper democracy.
According to political analyst James Igwe, the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission demonstrated favoritism towards certain political parties during the election proceedings.
In light of this observation, Igwe urged the commission to promote democratic growth by conducting impartial and trustworthy elections.
