Kwankwaso reveals why Sanusi was reinstated as Emir of Kano, citing political and cultural reasons for the decision. Full story here.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), emphasized that the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano and the demolitions carried out by Governor Engr. Kabir Abba Yusuf were in line with the party’s campaign promises.

Kwankwaso further claimed that individuals in Abuja influenced the former Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero, to return to Kano despite accepting the dissolution of the five emirates established by the Ganduje administration.

During an interview on Prime Time, a political show on Arise News in Abuja, Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, expressed no remorse for fulfilling the commitments made during their campaign, which led to the governor’s election. He highlighted that the decision to reunite Kano as a single traditional institution was a core campaign issue, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the city’s unity.

Version 1: Upon his inauguration, he initiated a consultation process. It is worth noting that the emirates established by Rimi were dissolved by Sabo Bakinzuwo, who succeeded him at the Race Course during the swearing-in ceremony.

Subsequently, after a year of thorough consultations, the governor opted to adhere to the proper procedures through the State House of Assembly, leading to the reinstatement of Sanusi. The people supported him for various reasons, including the desire to strengthen the Kano emirate.

Therefore, our actions are not arbitrary; they are rooted in history. The decision reflects the will of the people of Kano State, and the other four emirs have acknowledged and vacated their palaces accordingly.
