President Bola Tinubu has been urged to reconsider the appointments of the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) by Attahiru Jega, a former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Jega stated that because there are suspicions that some of the RECs are biassed, Tinubu ought to examine their appointments.
Tinubu proposed ten RECs approximately a month ago, and the Senate confirmed their appointments.
But some RECs have been charged of engaging in political partisanship.
In response to the criticisms, Jega stated that it is incorrect that their appointment was not reviewed.
“I think there is no doubt that if the President were listening, my advice would be to immediately review the appointment of the Resident Electoral Commissioners that was passed by the Senate,” Jega stated during a Monday appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
It’s crucial because, quite obviously, it conveys the incorrect impression that the government wants to strengthen election integrity. It also implies that the independence and objectivity of the election management body are not being sufficiently protected.
“I would like to think that Mr. President was not fully provided with all the necessary details regarding these appointments, or he was misinformed.”
