On Thursday, the Oyo State House of Assembly granted Engineer Seyi Makinde’s request to apply for a new N50 billion loan.
During the plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi, the lawmakers granted the request (Ona Ara).
Adebo Ogundoyin, the assembly’s speaker, missed the plenary since his mother, Mrs. Justina Ogundoyin, had passed away.
Nevertheless, according to DAILY POST, none of the MPs who were elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform were present during the session.
At the most recent elections held in their individual constituencies, every lawmaker elected in 2019 on the APC platform was defeated.
The Minority Leader, Asimiyu Niran Alarape (Oyo East/Oyo West), Isiaka Kazeem Tunde (Atiba), Olawumi Oladejo (Ogbomoso North), and Seyi Adisa among a few people who did not attend the plenary on Thursday (AFIJIO).
As of the time this story was submitted on Friday, the cause of their absence had not been made public.
Makinde, who was elected to a second term in office, took office in May 2019 and has already submitted five loan requests to the house that have all been granted.
The legislature had approved the governor’s proposal to borrow N10 billion for infrastructure in July 2019.
Also, the legislators granted the governor’s request to borrow a N7 billion loan from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in October 2019 to support agricultural settlements in Akufo in the Ido Local Government Area and Eruwa in the Ibarapa East Local Government Area of the state.
Another N6 billion credit facility for the governor was authorised in August 2021.
The state legislature granted the governor’s proposal to use the N18.7 billion Federal Government Bridge loan facility in October 2021.
The lawmakers also agreed to the governor’s proposal for a second N2 billion loan in June 2022.
The decision to accept the most recent loan, according to the governor’s letter to the parliamentarians, was made to complete current projects and carry out new ones in the state.
Abiodun Fadeyi, the Deputy Speaker, who oversaw the plenary on Thursday, read the letter from the governor.
Sanjo Adedoyin Onaolapo, the majority leader of the house, stated during his presentation that the money will significantly help the current administration carry out contracts for infrastructure development projects.
The governor’s request was subsequently unanimously approved by the parliamentarians present during the session.
