According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Africa is set to reclaim its proper role in the global economic network.

Putin made the remarks during a trilateral meeting with Mr Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of the Comoros, and Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

St. Petersburg, Russia, hosted the event.

During the meeting, which preceded the Russia-Africa Summit 2023, Putin stated that the African Union is a major regional body that has shaped the continent’s current security system.

“I would like to remind you that Russia was among the first to respond positively to the initiative advanced by Senegal’s President, who preceded you in this position, to grant the African Union full membership in the G20.”

“We hope that the decision will be adopted at the September G20 Summit in New Delhi.”

“As before, Russia is ready to help strengthen African countries’ sovereignty and contribute to Africa becoming a key partner in the new system of multipolar world order,” he said.

He went on to say that Russia would prioritise the concerns during the summit, which begins on Thursday.

“We will also talk about how to strengthen trade and economic cooperation, ensure food and energy security, and develop national healthcare systems.”

“The planned adoption of the Second Russia-Africa Summit Declaration and the Russia-African Union Action Plan for 2023-2024 will help launch practical efforts in the areas mentioned above and many others,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

Despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic and sanctions imposed on Russia, he said, the country had ensured the expansion of its commercial and economic ties.

“In 2022, our mutual trade reached approximately 18 billion dollars, and it increased by nearly 35% in the first six months of 2023.”

“Russia continues to be a reliable food supplier for Africa.”

“Russian food exports will total 4.7 billion dollars in 2022.” Many significant Russian corporations are doing well in Africa.

“Key areas of cooperation include energy, subsoil use, and agriculture.” “There are excellent opportunities for collaboration in research and technology, education, and culture,” Putin stated.

He stated that Russia values its relationship with the Union of the Comoros, which is built on mutual respect and the balancing of each other’s interests.

He went on to say that the country had development potential in a variety of areas.

“We are open to cooperation with your country in all areas,” he continued.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) is a media partner of the Russia-Africa Summit 2023, and its Managing Director, Mr Buki Ponle, is also in attendance.
