The highly anticipated second match between undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury is set for December 21, 2024, according to Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.
Usyk emerged triumphant in their initial clash on May 18, securing a split decision victory and becoming the first undisputed champion in the era of four belts. The rematch, originally scheduled for October, has now been rescheduled for December.
Alalshikh confirmed the new date on X (formerly Twitter), expressing, “The world will witness another historic fight. Our dedication to boxing fans remains unwavering. We hope you enjoy it.”
Usyk, who added Fury’s WBC belt to his collection of WBA, WBO, and IBF titles, solidified his status as the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999. The 37-year-old Ukrainian maintains an undefeated record with 22 professional wins.
Although the venue for the rematch has not been revealed, it will coincide with the Riyadh Season, an annual winter festival in Saudi Arabia renowned for hosting prominent boxing matches. The rematch provides 35-year-old Fury with an opportunity to avenge his sole professional loss in his 16-year career.
The participation of all four belts in the rematch remains uncertain. The IBF is considering stripping Usyk of his title due to his failure to face the mandatory challenger. Consequently, the rematch may not include the IBF title, but it is still poised to be a significant event in the boxing world.
Usyk and Fury had previously agreed to a two-fight contract, and despite some uncertainties, Alalshikh’s announcement confirms the rematch. Boxing enthusiasts can anticipate an exciting showdown in December.
Their initial encounter surpassed expectations, delivering an intense and competitive battle. Usyk’s ring intelligence and adaptability make him a formidable adversary, aiming for a more definitive victory in the rematch. Meanwhile, Fury, who dominated the early rounds of their first fight, believes that with the right adjustments, he can emerge victorious.
