The official wage of the former governor during his career as a public servant from 1999 to his impeachment in 2005, according to US Ambassador to Nigeria Mary Beth Leonard, did not match the reported amount.
Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the previous governor of Bayelsa State, stole $954,000, which has now been restored to the state government by the federal government.
The news was revealed by Mary Beth Leonard, the US ambassador to Nigeria, during a press conference on Thursday in Abuja.

She said that from 1999 until his impeachment in 2005, the former governor’s official wage during his time working for the government did not correspond to the stated sum.
She added, “However, he amassed millions of dollars during that period through misuse of office and money laundering.”
At the age of 62, Alamieyeseigha passed away in October 2015.
The immediate directive from President Muhammadu Buhari is that the money be used to improve Bayelsa’s healthcare system.
