A US military helicopter and a passenger jet were involved in a mid-air collision in Washington DC. Watch the footage and get the latest updates on the incident.
A regional passenger jet operated by a subsidiary of American Airlines collided midair with a US military helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) on Wednesday night. This incident led to the suspension of all flights and initiated an extensive emergency response.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that American Eagle Flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines on a Bombardier CRJ700 traveling from Wichita, Kansas, was approaching Runway 33 at Reagan National when it collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter around 9 p.m. local time.
According to American Airlines, the aircraft had 60 passengers and four crew members on board. A US defense official informed CNN that the US Army Black Hawk helicopter was manned by a crew of three and did not have any VIPs aboard. The total number of casualties is still unknown as emergency personnel from various agencies continue searching for possible survivors.
“Newly-appointed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that all available US Coast Guard resources are being deployed for search and rescue operations in response to this horrific incident at DCA.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump had received a briefing on the incident.
“Leavitt informed Fox News that, unfortunately, a military helicopter seems to have collided with a regional jet at DCA Airport in Washington, DC. She further mentioned that the Trump administration’s ‘thoughts and prayers’ are with those affected and encouraged the public to adhere to law enforcement guidance.”
DC Fire and EMS had reported that fireboats and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene following a “small aircraft” crash in the Potomac River. Additionally, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) stated that several agencies were involved in conducting a search and rescue operation in the river.
“A multi-agency search and rescue operation is currently in progress on the Potomac River following an aircraft crash,” MPD announced on X. The department further clarified that, contrary to initial reports, its helicopter was not involved in the incident but is aiding in response efforts.
The airport announced that all takeoffs and landings were suspended due to an “aircraft emergency.” However, the terminal remained open for passengers.
Officials are advising the public to steer clear of the area so that emergency personnel can carry out their duties without impediment.
