US initiates fresh self-defense strike in Syria – Pentagon

According to the US military, a facility used by “Iran-backed groups” was struck during the most recent air campaign.

As Washington’s latest response to drone and rocket strikes on its sites in the region, US President Joe Biden has ordered an airstrike against a weapons stockpile in Syria that is purportedly utilised by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and allied groups.

The latest airstrike was carried out by two US F-15 fighter jets on Wednesday in eastern Syria, according to a statement from the Pentagon. On October 26, the US began attacking militant groups with Iranian support in the same area, claiming responsibility for attacks on US positions.

Tehran has issued several threats, stating that if Washington continues to back Israel in its assault of Gaza, other regional powers will not remain silent and that “new fronts” will be formed.

The drone and rocket strikes have resulted in at least 45 injuries to US forces. A US contractor was killed on October 18 in an attack on the Al-Asad Airbase in Iraq; the contractor apparently perished while taking cover.

As per the Pentagon, “We are ready to take any additional necessary steps to safeguard our people and our facilities.” “We strongly advise against escalation.”

Since 2014, US forces have been occupying the oil-rich northeastern part of Syria illegally, claiming that they are fighting terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS). Despite the terrorist group’s defeat by US, Russian, Syrian, and Iranian forces in the areas under Damascus’ authority, the occupation has persisted.
