A tragic incident unfolds as a US-based Nigerian doctor ends his life following a court order demanding $15,000 in child support, raising concerns about mental health and financial pressures.

Dr. Ikeena Erine, a 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist living in the United States, has tragically died by suicide after a court ruling mandated he pay $15,000 per month in child support to his ex-wife.

The incident took place on Sunday, January 26. According to reports, Erine, a native of Anambra State, had been involved in a prolonged legal dispute concerning divorce and child custody. The court ruling favored his former wife and reportedly caused him significant financial strain.

In a post on X.com, Nigerian-American Claayton Udo confirmed the tragic news and voiced his concerns about the ruling’s impact. He stated, “The mistreatment of African men in the USA must stop. In a deeply distressing situation, Dr. Ikena Erinne, an American-trained cardiologist, reportedly ended his life after being ordered by a U.S court to pay his ex-wife $15,000 monthly amidst an extended and contentious divorce battle. This heartbreaking event underscores systemic issues within the legal system that disproportionately affect African men.”

Udo, a self-proclaimed expert in psychological and mental abuse, stated that Erinne had invested a substantial amount in legal fees only to lose the case eventually. He further asserted that Erinne’s medical license had been revoked, worsening his financial difficulties.

“He took his own life. He had already spent thousands on legal fees, which turned out to be wasted money. This is a process that depletes your resources—you go through court proceedings, and they drain you financially. In this case, he lost his license as a cardiologist while being burdened with $15,000 in monthly payments and restricted access to his children,” Udo added.

Obim Onujiogu, another member of the Nigerian community in the U.S., confirmed Erinne’s passing on Facebook. He described him as a “compassionate healer and devoted family man.”

Onujiogu announced that a funeral service is scheduled for Monday, February 3, in Maryland, U.S. He shared the message: “In Loving Memory of Dr. Ikenna C. Erinne. With heavy hearts, the ASA DC family announces the sudden and untimely passing of Dr. Ikenna Erinne on January 26, 2025.” Described as a beloved father, son, brother and esteemed cardiologist,”
