While the highly anticipated match between England and the United States finished in a 0-0 stalemate, the World Cup host nation of Qatar was eliminated from the competition after losing 3-1 to Senegal in its second round.

Both England and the United States had scoring opportunities but came up empty-handed. During the first half of the game, American captain Christian Pulisic struck the crossbar while teammate Weston McKennie missed the target from roughly 7 meters out.

Harry Kane, the captain of the English team, missed a chance to score the game-winning goal with a header.

Throughout the game, Senegalese supporters beat on drums in a steady pace, while Qatari supporters erupted into a wave throughout the stadium.

After the game, the Netherlands and Ecuador drew 1-1 in the second Group A game of the day, sealing Qatar’s destiny in the competition.

Regardless of how their next game against the Netherlands turns out on Tuesday, Qatar no longer has a chance to move to the round of 16. The host nation has never been eliminated from a World Cup competition as quickly than they did.

The only other host nation that did not go past the group stage of the competition was South Africa, but it did manage to win one of its games.

Some information in this report came from The Associated Press and Reuters.
