Donald Trump is poised to take the oath of office as the 47th President of the United States, marking his return to the White House for a second term.

Tech billionaires, cabinet nominees, and former presidents are attending the ceremony in the rotunda of the US Capitol. For the first time in decades, it was relocated indoors because of the bitter cold.

Trump plans to announce a “national emergency” at the US-Mexico border, label certain drug cartels as terrorist organizations, and eliminate government diversity programs.

However, according to an official, he will not be announcing tariffs on the first day.

Before Trump takes office, Biden grants pre-emptive pardons to several individuals “facing potential criminal prosecutions,” such as Dr. Anthony Fauci and the officers who testified about the Capitol riot.

The Capital One Arena is quickly reaching capacity, now approximately two-thirds full, as the incoming president and entourage arrive at the Capitol for the ceremony.

The crowd is watching everything on a giant Jumbotron suspended from the ceiling, loudly booing whenever images of Mike Pence appear. As Donald Trump’s former vice president, Pence had to flee for his life from the Capitol on January 6, 2021—when some protesters chanted “hang Mike Pence” due to his refusal to stop the certification of Trump’s defeat.

Not surprisingly, even louder boos were directed at the Clintons and President Obama.

Apart from Elon Musk, the various billionaires received minimal crowd reaction—just a scattering of applause was noted for the controversial Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

James Price

Meanwhile, out on the streets of DC, I’ve just caught up with James Price, who took a particularly circuitous route to get here.

He’s from Preston, Lancashire, and traveled here by taking two flights and a train. Price spent $1,200 (£976) on the trip.

He says it has already been worth every single penny, and mentions he would have even paid more.

And he’s not too concerned about the cold or the switch to an indoor arena.

“Whether indoors or outdoors, it doesn’t matter to me,” he adds.

“I absolutely love being in the presence of all the Trump supporters.”

Price expresses his hope that Trump serves as a role model for politicians worldwide and wishes they would adopt his bold and assertive leadership style.

“He doesn’t beat around the bush like most politicians,” he says, using a strong word. “With Trump, he tells it like it is, and that’s incredibly refreshing.”

“Here we come, Trump 25.”

Former US presidents and first ladies

Two weeks following Jimmy Carter’s funeral, all the living presidents have gathered once more. Similar to the memorial service at the National Cathedral, they are entering the Capitol one by one in chronological order.

It creates a striking display of former American power, representing the nation’s most exclusive club.

Additionally, as was the case two weeks ago, Michelle Obama is the only former first lady absent.
